NOTES
  RTC General Membership Meeting
   November 9, 2006, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Humboldt County Office of Education - Sequoia Room

  INTRODUCTIONS
  -------------

RTC President Bob Morse called the meeting to order. Attendees briefly introduced themselves by name and company or institutional affiliation.

  BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS
  -------------------

  Bob Morse noted the following:

  - The RTC has received a quote from Suddenlink to establish a wireless connection at the Arcata Airport. Airport authorities have determined that the amount exceeds what they can presently afford so the RTC will be releasing an RFP during the week of November 13, 2006 allowing other vendors to submit quotes. These will be due back by December 15, 2006.

  - Governor Schwarzenegger signed Executive Order S-21-06 which establishes a Statewide broadband task force that, according to the press release, will let “experts from government and business work together to identify and eliminate obstacles to making broadband internet access ubiquitous in the state.”

Board Director, Tina Nerat, is recovering from recent open heart surgery but, nonetheless, continues to keep involved through email! We wish her well and hope to have her back with us at our meetings in January 2007.

  - The RTC will hold its annual Holiday Season Mixer on Thursday, December 7, 2006 from 5:30-9:00 p.m. at the Plaza Grill in Arcata. Food will be provided with a no-host bar. There will be no general meeting in December.

  - GUEST SPEAKER: SEAN McLAUGHLIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ACCESS HUMBOLDT
  ---------------------------------------------------------
Sean McLaughlin presented a report on the current status and future plans of Access Humboldt, the community media entity created as a result of the recently completed cable franchise renegotiation process. The facility will be located on the Eureka High School campus. The center will be equipped to handle the many types of media which may be submitted by any member of the community. He noted that all of the local city and county governments have worked together in planning for this community access center.
Sean explained that community television does not fall under the same restrictions as commercial networks which thus providing great opportunity as well as the potential for controversy. Submissions are not screened prior to airing. The only restriction is that submissions may not be created to advertise or promote commercial establishments.
Channels 8, 10, and 12 will be available through Access Humboldt and two digital channels will be added. Productions will also be streamed on the Web.
