After a couple month summer hiatus, the next RTC monthly meeting is upon us.
Mark your calendars for Sept 14 at 5:30pm in the Sequoia Room of the
Humboldt County Office of Education, 901 Myrtle Ave in Eureka.
Daria Topousis will talk about Innovation, Creativity, and the Birth of the
Rocketry in the U.S. In October of 1936, a group of Caltech graduate
students and local community members gathered in the hills outside of
Pasadena for the first successful firing of a rocket motor. This group,
dubbed the "Suicide Squad" and motivated by science fiction novels and
Robert Goddard's theories, was ostracized by Caltech and ridiculed by the
media. Despite this adversity, the group's work led to the birth of
rocketry in the U.S. and to the formation of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
known for missions such as the Mars rovers. This talk will tell the story
of those early days with a focus on what enabled such heightened innovation
and creativity.
Hope to see you there! Tina
