We moved to Dow's Prairie in late October of 2005. Before that (while
building our house) we'd had DSL in McKinleyville. I found out I
couldn't get DSL at our new address and went with Cox (at the time).
However somewhere early in 2006 I talked with an AT&T crew (I think it
was people out repairing lines after the New Year's storm) and they told
me the problem was backlevel equipment at box 38 (which is on Dow's
Prairie only 100 feet or so south of the junction with Baird) and their
understanding was that it was slated for upgrading, but no schedule had
been set.
I dont' know how much credence to put in the statement, of course. But
my impression is that AT&T does want to expand its DSL offerings, the
question is how fast they move and where they move first.
I wonder if we could get a petition together, or even a position by the
RTC, asking AT&T to "aggressively" move into Dow's Prairie, Fieldbrook,
Blue Lake, etc. Regardless of anyone's opinion on either Suddenlink's
or AT&T's service (or any second-tier DSL provider, such as Humboldt
Internet) it is clear that competition would be extremely valuable to us
customers.
