     An amplifier will only amplify what is on the cable line. If the 
line has a lot of noise on it then the amplifier will boost not only the 
cable signal but the noise as well (which can make things worse). A 
signal booster such as this 
http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/signal_booster/ will 
boost the signal for not only you but everyone else on your block by 
taking work away from the switches. Signal boosters run from $40.00 to 
$150.00 where as an amplifier runs from $10.00 to $50.00.
