"The Need for a regional approach to rural problems: What is the Northcoast
Doing?"

NorCAN, the Northern California Association of Nonprofits, is pleased to
host Dr. Rollin Richmond. Dr. Richmond will talk about the need for a
regional approach to rural problems, as well as, Redwood Coast Rural Action
(RCRA) and its role in the management and development of broadband internet
access for our region and RCRA's role in the creation of the California
Center for Rural Policy.

Dr. Richmond received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from San Diego
State University in 1966.  He spent 20 years in the Department of Biology at
Indiana University and served as chairperson of Biology at Indiana
University from 1982-1987.  He went on to serve as founding Dean of the
College of the Arts and Sciences and professor of Biology at the University
of South Florida from 1990 until 1995.  Dr. Richmond became Provost at the
State University of New York at Stony Brook and Professor of Ecology and
Evolution in 1995 and served until 1999.  He served as Provost and Professor
of Zoology and Genetics at Iowa State University from 1999 until 2002.

More Recently Dr. Richmond was named the sixth President of Humboldt State
University in July of 2002.  One of the reasons that he is in Humboldt
County is that he and his wife, Ann, fell in love with Shelter Cove nearly
10 years ago - he values the opportunity to live hear and get paid for it
too!

 NorCAN Members and Non-Members are encouraged to attend a short NorCAN
business meeting beginning at 11:30 a.m. with lunch beginning at Noon on
Tuesday, January 16th at the Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata. 

Cost of the luncheon will be $20 for NorCAN members and $30 for non-members.
If you would like to attend the luncheon, please make your reservation by
contacting Irene Bartley, Nonprofit Resource Coordinator, at the Humboldt
Area Foundation at 442-2993, by e-mail at NorCAN at hafoundation.org or send a
check made out to NorCAN to 373 Indianola Road, Bayside, CA  95524. Please
make sure to indicate your vegetarian or non-vegetarian menu choice

Pre-Registration is required for this event.  Registration with payment is
required by Friday, January 12, 2007 with vegetarian or non-vegetarian
choice indicated. Cancellations must be received no later than Wednesday,
January 10, 2007.
