[RTC List] Cell phone service and fiber cable

I was wondering if SoHum was out yesterday. Don't forget Verizon also
uses the AT&T network to backhaul traffic to their network and switches.
I'm told they aren't connected to AT&T fiber, but the backup microwave
is obviously completely overloaded when the fiber fails. Verizon local
calls would still work with the local switch in operation. Frontier
phone co. in Ferndale/Petrolia/Honeydew was out too - they need AT&T to
get to their network. We're all dependent upon the AT&T network, whether
it's going out on fiber or microwave. Tina

So why is my "land phone" Verizon long distance not working? Local
calls work fine. I even tried calling their toll free 800 to file a
complaint.and got the "quick busy" signal. When I used email to file an
repair..they automatically bounced mail back to me that even calling the
800 shouldn't have cause a busy signal.and I should have been put in a
phone queue. Duh!

We were driving back from SF yesterday. Gregg Foster had warned me in a
voice mail about service issues, and sure enough, we saw ATT bucket
trucks next to a burned building north of Willits.

Remember, most of the cell phone companies must use ATT to backhaul
their traffic out of here to their switches and networks. I have Edge
and found that it worked here locally only if I put in the area code - I
got errors every time when dialing just the local 7 digit number. Tina

It is pretty clear why the fiber going out would kill internet and long
distance service, and why it would kill long distance service even via
cell phones. What isn't clear to me right now is why at least Edge
Wireless's service is out completely - the local cells appear to be off
the air. I could hypothesize but would prefer facts - does anyone on
the list know?
