Humboldt State University is pleased to announce a new computing sciences program designed especially for American Indian and Alaskan Native students. The Coalition for American Indians in Computing Project (CAIC) will provide students with the opportunity to earn a Bachelors Degree in Computing Science while working with IT professionals in the tribal community. This program begins in Fall 2007, with an optional Summer Academy.
Students in the CAIC Project will receive individual mentoring, research experience and participate in problem-solving projects. The CAIC Project will validate tribal values, address tribal computing needs and foster the students sense of self-efficacy and leadership potential. In addition to the usual financial aid packages which are available, students participating in CAIC will also be eligible for stipends through tribal internships and work experience.
There is also a CAIC Summer Academy open to all American Indian and Native Alaskan community college students, as well as high school students. This three-week computing science camp is designed to provide an orientation and introduction to computing sciences while having fun! There will be site visits from tribal leaders and professionals, outings to local tribal facilities, introductions to American Indian support services, academic advising, recreational activities, tribal internships and discussions of career opportunities.
We invite you to join together with a cohort of tribal leaders, IT and education professionals to help identify students whom you believe may be interested and will benefit from this unique opportunity. A program flyer and applications for the Summer Camp are available on our website at www.humboldt.edu/~caic. Please feel free to post and distribute the flyers. We would also like to personally contact prospective CAIC students and would appreciate your help by providing us with the names, email address and phone numbers of interested students.
For more information please contact Professor Chip Dixon at 707-826-3530 or email us at caic at humboldt.edu. We appreciate your assistance in promoting this unique opportunity we are offering here at Humboldt State University. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Kitty Yancheff
CAIC Administrative Coordinator
