CSU to go entirely to wind power

Colorado State University plans to run entirely on wind power.
CSU said Thursday it will convert its entire Fort Collins campus energy use
to 100 percent wind power, by building a wind farm in northern Colorado to
general electricity.
The project is expected to be completed in eight years.
The CSU Research Foundation, a private, nonprofit advocacy arm of the
university, recently finalized a deal with Wind Holding LLC to develop the
wind farm on the 11,000-acre Maxwell Ranch owned by the university. The
ranch is near the Wyoming border.
Wind Holding is a consortium of wind companies and experts in the United
States.
Called the CSU Green Power Project, the wind farm would be capable of
generating a minimum of 65 megawatts, or about 25 wind turbines, with a peak
potential of up to 200 megawatts. At peak demand, CSU currently uses about
16 megawatts of power.
The size, and thus the cost, of the wind farm will be determined by wind and
environmental studies of the area, said Bruce Morley, CEO of Wind Holding.
Since the project will generate more wind power than the electrical needs of
campus, it could produce up to an additional $30 million in revenue for the
university over the life of the project, which is about 25 years.
In addition, CSU can become a net exporter of green power and help other
utilities in the state meet new, higher requirements for using renewable
resources to generate power.
Gov. Bill Ritter on Tuesday signed a law raising the requirements for the
state's largest utilities to 20 percent of their sales by 2020. Smaller
utilities must have at 10 percent of their power from renewable resources by
2020.
