Like many of you, I've been sitting on the sidelines as this discussion goes on and while I do agree that we need redundant fiber, it is unlikely to solve the problem of 100% reliability
No matter where you go, somewhere, sometime a switch or connection or line will go down and you won't have an Internet connection till it is fixed.
I'm on a satellite, so had no problem getting to the Internet, but my email was down..I had to apologize to some of
my users who decided that it would be a good day to have problems, but none of them were critical and they understood
the problem.
The last time the Humboldt connection went down, I was in the Bay Area and the storm took out the Internet down there for the better part of a a day at my location, but it was only when I got back to Humboldt did it seem to be a big deal.
I'd love to have a fast fiber connection, but the local companies (AT&T, SuddenLink) refuse to bring a line up 500' from the
street (even when I offered to pay for the connection). Paying for a redundant connection without being able to get service once
it is installed doesn't seem like a great solution. If I was going to move into town for a faster connection, it wouldn't be Eureka or
Arcata, but somewhere out of the area, with better overall infrastructure, support and entertainment.
Good luck
Bob
