[RTC List] Outage outrage

Keri,
Not necessarily true...
I have satellite and it worked fine for the Internet, but my email is local and it was not functioning,
since the ISP was down too.

Doesn't say much for buying local, does it!

If you folks lived in a satellite or dial-up service only area like I do you wouldn't have noticed a thing. Except that I tried to access the Humboldt County Library website and got nowhere. I did notice that Verizon long distance service was out, but I then used an 800 number and got right through.

I don't know about others on this list, but I wouldn't have a clue how to set up or use dial-up now - those brain cells died a dozen years ago ...

A second (eastbound) fiber optic line, plus expanded wireless coverage, seems to me (as a business person - I am not a technologist, I just use the stuff) to be the only sane solution.

And talking of sanity, presumably Caltrans has a map of where the fiber optic line runs beside 101 - couldn't they share this with their subcontractors? Do these guys get penalized financially (to an extent that might make them focus a little more in future) for screwing with our economy and emergency services? If they are penalized, perhaps that money could go into a fund to provide a second fiber optic line.

No, wait - that would be way too logical ...

Also, RTC could develop advice and strategies on how to deal with an outage. For example, how many people are aware that they can use their phone modems with AT&T if the dsl goes out? Does Suddenlink offer free dialup for travelers as well?

Sean Connors e-mail is the perfect sort of addition to the bundle of surveys that RTC is gathering. I wish we could survey (maybe through other media driving folks to a survey site) all the small, non-tech businesses that were affected by the outage. Id like to hear stories of elders who couldnt get medicine, children who lost out on some school activity, small shops that lost sales, etc. Everyone knows that tech businesses are affected, but it would be useful to illustrate how broad the ripple is.
