  WHAT
Why are two tech-focused nonprofits excited about low-tech books? Open and free access to literature and other writings has long been considered essential to education and to the maintenance of an open society. To that end, the Internet Archive Bookmobile (www.archive.org/texts/bookmobile.php) is pairing up with nonprofit TechSoup (www.techsoup.org) to celebrate the important role libraries play in keeping information free and available to everyone; whether it is by offering free access to printed materials, or allowing patrons access to the Internet using public computers.

On a two-week tour of Northern California, both organizations will visit rural libraries across the state, offering free books to patrons and free technical advice to librarians.

  WHO
  - The Internet Archive is a nonprofit that is building an Internet library of historical collections and books in the public domain and offers permanent access to this information free of charge.
  - Sarah Washburn, representative of TechSoup and its MaintainIT Project. The MaintainIT Project gathers and distributes stories around how libraries are maintaining and supporting public computers. BACKGROUND
Fueled by the Internet Archive Bookmobile, TechSoup’s MaintainIT Project will travel to rural libraries across Northern California from September 1-15, 2007. At each stop, it will be gathering and sharing stories to help librarians keep public computers running in their communities. The Bookmobile will showcase its virtual collection of over 20,000 public domain books to library patrons and staff. The tour will also promote the important work libraries do to keep information free and available to everyone.
