A job opening at US Servas in Arcata was recently announced through North
Coast Area Nonprofits (see below for contact information):
TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE
United States Servas, Inc. is a non-profit membership organization that
fosters understanding of cultural diversity through a global
person-to-person network of hosts and travelers committed to promoting a
more just and peaceful world. The US headquarters is located in Arcata, CA.
We are a small office looking for a new member of our staff.
The Technical Associate is a 20-hour, non-exempt position and is eligible
for employee benefits as specified for non-exempt part-time employees in the
Servas Staff Handbook.
This position is primarily an in-office computer technician, providing
technical support including, but not limited to, the development of the host
book, host and traveler application processing, renewal processing, refund
processing, newsletter web posting, mailings, website editing, word
processing (Microsoft Word and Adobe Indesign/Pagemaker), and spreadsheet
(Microsoft Excel) editing.
The Technical Associate is responsible for devising and maintaining computer
tools using software such as the Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel) to
improve office workflow and information maintenance, and provide fundamental
technical support to the computer workstations in the office. This employee
may also be asked to perform other non-technical duties associated with the
efficient functioning of the Servas office as required.
The Technical Associate reports to the office administrator, unless
otherwise directed.
PRIMARY DUTIES
. Provide computer support to the office administrator and office staff,
specifically during campaign, newsletter, and other communication mailings
and bulk e-mailings (mail merge).
. Suggest, research, purchase with the OK of the Office Administrator, and
install software appropriate for the Servas office environment.
. Provide logistical support for mailings including downloading and
preparing addresses.
. Provide excellent phone and in-person customer service to potential
members, hosts, and travelers.
. Act as the back-up office manager in processing traveler/host
applications, renewals, host book returns and responding to members' phone
inquiries.
. Maintain and upgrade on-line capacity to accept payments through on the
Web.
WORKSTATION DUTIES
. Troubleshoot basic workstation problems.
. Diagnose and resolve issues with workstations that have network problems.
. Install software as needed.
DATABASE DUTIES
. Support administrative efforts in the use of the host and traveler
database.
. Support administrative efforts regarding the development of the on-line
host database interface.
WEB SUPPORT DUTIES
. Support and maintain existing and new website features, including on-line
credit card transactions.
. Work with content and graphic editors (Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop) to
develop new content and update existing content on the U.S. Servas Website.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
. Ability to write PHP-based web applications.
. Experience with database query writing and database development using
PostgreSQL.
. Proficient in everyday use of a PC platform computer environment using
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Windows 2003 Small Business Server.
. Ability to perform mail/data merges using Microsoft Word and Adobe
Indesign.
. Extensive experience using Microsoft Office; particularly with regard to
using Excel to import data into Word Documents.
. Ability to perform basic computer troubleshooting in an office
environment.
. Familiarity with Dreamweaver and web site maintenance.
. Ability to follow and implement orders made by the Chief Information
Officer (IT Chair) regarding the use of his server for the day-to-day tasks
required by the office.
. Familiar with (File Transfer Protocol) FTP and/or Secure Shell (SSH).
. Comfortable with command-line interface.
. Well-developed communication skills with the ability to explain computer
related functions and tasks clearly.
. Ability to be focused while working in a small but busy office
environment.
. Willingness to work in a non-profit board-directed office.
. Accuracy, flexibility and discipline.
. Good phone and in-person customer service skills.
. Leadership skills.
. Ability to work independently, follow directions, and work as an important
member of the office team.
. Ability to work with staff, interns, and volunteers.
. Ability to return to work after interruptions (i.e. phone calls, etc.).
. A good nature and a sense of humor.
. Willingness to perform other duties as required.
Desired work schedule: M-F 1-5pm. Some schedule flexibility possible.
Wage range: $12-15/hour, new hires generally start at the beginning of the
pay scale.
Desired start date: Training Jan. 30, 2008. Some training will be starting
at 5:30PM
