Several of you have heard my enthusiastic "after action report" on the 8th
annual Southern California Linux Expo that i attended last month in LA. The
conference website has posted the presentation decks and audio for many of
the Saturday and Sunday presentations.
The conference cost $70, but one of the linux magazines had a 30% off coupon
code i used to register and i found out later several vendors had 50% off
coupons.
This conference was professionally run even though it was put on by a bunch
of user groups. many of the speakers were of OSCON (O'Reilly Open Source
Convention) caliber. however, OSCON costs about $1500! I haven't been able
to afford to go to OSCON since 2003.
Attendees come from all over the country for the quality of the conference
and the cheap price. There are also sessions on Friday organized around
several themes, Open Source in Education, Women in Open Source, Fedoracon,
Ubucon. In part because of these Friday themes, there was a wider range of
people attending than your normal sysadmins, fanboys, academics and vendor
shills (although each of these groups was well represented). Oh, and there
was pretty good representation from the BSD folks too. Each of the FreeBSD,
OpenBSD, NetBSD, PCBSD flavors had booths in the vendor hall. I wasn't the
oldest attendee and didn't have the longest beard! Several attendees brought
their teenage daughters and sons.
I'll be headed back next year to SCALE9x and suggest you put it on your
calendars. It's usually the third weekend in February.
The link below is to the saturday schedule page. it's as good an entry page
as any. poke around the site to see which presentations you're interested
in. Don't forget to check sunday's schedule and sessions as well.
